Welcome to the Topanga Sketchbook Club!
A unique class kept small and full of wonder!
I provide a space outdoors for small groups of kiddos to get grounded in the wilderness as well as fly with their creative visions of the world, themselves and each other.
We circle up, connect and draw. We talk about ideas. We talk about nature. We improv stories together. Kids improv stories themselves. Kids find their visual voice in the sketchbook that is provided and worked with for the duration. Every day there is simple observational drawing of the natural world. A leaf, a seedpod, a stick. Later when we are goofing around we might build a structure out of stones and then draw that. Paint and collage materials are provided as well.
Every class is unique and created in response to the energy and needs of your child and the group as a whole. The last session was consumed by treasure hunts/maps for a while. I keep the size small so that this kind intimacy and care is possible.
The name of the game is connection in nature, to each other and to ones own sense of wonder and story. We sit together in silence and write (the youngers will dictate) or draw, we will shout and dance and laugh.
Who knows, maybe the drawings paintings and stories will merge, maybe they wont. We will hold for freedom of expression, practiced slow observation, and tons of individualized attention in drawing out the creative voice.
At the end of the 10 weeks your child will have a body of work in that sketchbook that she will be proud of. It might read as a comic book. It might read as a song. It will certainly contain bits of the mystery that is your kids unique vision of the world. A dance with the wild inside and out.
